It's been too long since then, but I finally got around to it (in stages) after two reenactments, Independence Day, down days, and the passing of my grandfather.
He originally wanted something that was basically like this with a few minor alterations:
As I was lining up to start cutting the material, I remembered all of a sudden that I was going to wash it first--particularly the reds, just in case they faded. So, things got pushed back again so that I could do the washing first.
The day after I washed the material, I laid it out and cut it:
Now able to change the thread (and practically out of red anyway), I moved on to the outer layer shoulder seams. Easy peasy.
Oh dear. I forgot. I was supposed to put a pocket in this thing! Okay, I can do this...I've done very few pockets before and I planned on making what I was calling a "welt pocket". However, looking at my vintage sewing book (Talbots) I discovered that it was actually called a "bound pocket". So far, it's the best one yet! I can't help the slight untidy look at the ends of the binding, but I can say that I highly doubt it's going to rip out easily!
