This is going to be a mostly pictorial post. I bought a couple of (we think) WWII-era cots about a year ago from a friend who sells odds and ends "junk" and otherwise. One needed a new end bar and canvas. The other looked in perfect shape. I set it up and it ripped when I tried to get the second end-bar in. The fabric, though still seemingly tight, was just too old. So I poked it away as a "when I get there project". Well, "when I get there" was this past Saturday: All was going great up until this point. The frame had to be taken apart at the middle set of legs. That done, we slid the side bars through. It was here we hit a snag. Oddly, the holes in one set (hardware/hole in the wooden bar) did not line up and the bolts refused to go through, so both of us worked on and off on it for probably close to two hours before we finally got the thing reassembled. Then I discovered another problem. The canvas wasn't long enough! I'm not exactly sure how or why, but I knew how to fix that. Add length...the hard part was going to be to manipulated the cot while I sewed on the machine (no way, after all that work was I going to take the canvas back off). It took a little time, but I got it done today...and the cot is now finished, though now a little looser than I really wanted it. However, with a sleeping bag as a mattress (yes, we "thicken" our sleeping cots some), it ought to be fine.
