So I remedied that--with a strip of black underwear elastic. Yes...underwear elastic. It was black and not overly strong, so it was perfect.
Since we have begun attending a church that encourages headcoverings for the ladies, my vintage hat collection has increased. My mother gave me this cute black 'straw' 1950's hat recently. It is in great shape, except for one little thing--the elastic band designed to loop under the hair was shot. Dead. So I remedied that--with a strip of black underwear elastic. Yes...underwear elastic. It was black and not overly strong, so it was perfect. I may just end up wearing this to church this weekend...

This is take three...give me time and I maybe can at least get Take 2 up. Take 1 never really got completed and is going to be finished up somehow for my younger sister. (I was going to cut the bodice off and make a skirt until she tried it on and it almost fit her to perfection.) This mock-up is for the bridesmaid dresses for my older sister's upcoming wedding. I ended up just making the bodice (to save fabric) and repurposed a man's shirt to do so! (Can't go wrong with black and white, y'all...) We knew the skirt would be fine...but we wanted to see how the bodice lines would look and if I, Miss Picky About Wearing What's Comfortable, would like it. But really, it was more about the lines. :) (It is a down-sized 1950's pattern.) All in all, I am pleased with the way it looks/feels (I really kind of like it with the sweater underneath it!) and that it ended up being a wearable piece! Probably not the best sewn garment I've ever made, but I literally threw it together in a day... ~~Racheal~~If you are like me...you pop a button here and there or stick your high heels in your hem and rip it out on a fairly regular basis. I generally am able to locate all my busted buttons...and I generally just stick them on the top of my dresser for "later". My problem comes in with the fact that "later" happens a very long time after the initial need of fixing. This is why I have an entire drawer full of mending--missing buttons and ripped hems; and even an alteration or two. I decided recently that I was going to address my procrastination by tackling one or two items a day (or every other day as the case may end up being) until I completed my "fix-it" pile. So...over the past week I have re-hemmed three garments (one skirt and two dresses). [One of the dresses ended up being too small--yes, it's been there that long--but I got it fixed anyway.] And I have re-attached two buttons (two different tops). My next item on the list is a dress I made just over a year ago to wear to a friend's wedding. I am going to rip the lining out from around the armholes and re-stitch it. I messed it up when I originally made it...only I didn't realize that until I was complaining about the binding in the armholes (to which I am hypersensitive) and my sister looked at it and told me what was wrong. We'll see how long it takes at this rate to finish. :) ~~Racheal~~ |
