1860's Underpinnings: The Corset

Both of us girls needed new corsets. I knocked one of two of the list sometime back in September or early October...

The other I addressed more recently and actually remembered to take in-progress photos of this one!

I had intended to use a piece of cream twill that I had laid aside for this particular project...but I COULD NOT find it, so I used a double-layer technique. A lighter-weight cotton print and a heavy-duty muslin.

I essentially quilted the pieces together.

The busk, which I purchased separate (from a different vendor), had yet to arrive, so I couldn't quite finish right off. It was really alright, because I still had to do the eyelets--and I didn't want any stays in place for that job anyway!

Eyelets. I cannot seem to make them beautiful they way my older sister can....

I did a small amount of embroidery (or what passes for me--I'm a cross-stitcher and embroidery is not my forte) around the ends of some of the stays as reinforcement. I suppose when the stays start popping out (they probably will eventually with hard wear) I can go in and do some more as needed.

And there you have it...a finished 1860's corset! (There will be no "on" pictures because I do not post "underwear" photos of myself or anyone else. Even if the underwear is far more than what most people wear to the beach. It's just the principle! ;P)
